Bitter Melon by Cara Chow
Frances has lived her whole life following her mother's Asian customs and obeying all the rules. By following her mom's "old school' demands, she has a job and gets into Berkeley. But throughout the book, Frances gradually realizes she's her own person and starts carving out an identity for herself as a Chinese American, with the help from a teacher. This book is more appealing to people who can relate in some ways to this plot and this isn't more of an action, "violent" book for those types of readers.
