All These Things I've Done by Gabrielle Zevin
Gabrielle Zevin's books Elsewhere and Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac are local teen favorites. Her plots are always very intriguing and raise issues and questions that stay with the reader for a long time.
In All these Things I've Done (book 1 of the Birthright series) 16 year old Anya Balanchine faces problems that might crush other teens. Both her parents are dead -her father was a mob boss who ran a crime ring distributing chocolate which is now illegal in the year 2083. She is practically raising her brother, who is is brain damaged, and her younger sister by herself. She is accused of attempted murder when her ex-boyfriend is poisoned after eating some of her contraband chocolate. Anya is a strong, courageous, and smart character who is extremely appealing. Throw in a little romance (she meets the son of a local district attorney) and you've got a perfect teen story. This book is a fast paced, exciting read. The next book in the series is Because it is my Blood.
