Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Ender's Game is a science fiction book about 6 year old Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, a genius in the somewhat near future chosen to go to Battle School and train to be a commander of the International Fleet in the war against the Buggers, an insect-like alien race whom humankind only narrowly escaped in the First and Second Invasions. The plot seems, at first glance, to be nothing wildly out of the ordinary, but it is very well written, with interesting chracters and the subplots keep it from feeling like other "futuristic military" books.
