Anthem by Ayn Rand
A seemingly higher level book, Anthem is about a Utopian society where everyone has a name consisting of a word and a bunch of numbers. The main character, Equality 7-2521 is apparently different from all other men. He feels differently and thinks differently from all other men. In Ayn Rand's strange fictional world, all men are supposed to be happy, but from Equality's point of view it really doesn't seem like it. Ayn Rand's mysterious use of the word “we” continues to pester the readers throughout the story and Equality is left feeling as though something is missing in his world. After long nights of sneaking out and conducting scientific research, Equality discovers a magical box that glows. Apparently the box has been left from the Unmentionable Times. How many secrets are being kept in this society? Is it time to bring change to this strange community? And what is the significance of this strange use of “we” in Ayn Rand's made-up world?
