Book Pick of the Week - Teen Review

The Real Real by Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus - 4 ½ stars
Jesse O’Rourke was just a typical highschooler who wants to be the first in her family to go to college. She worked in a pastry shop making muffins and studied hard for school to get a scholarship. Her best friend was Caitlyn and she was pretty happy with her life. That was all before XTV came to her high school. Jesse was selected to be part of the core cast of a new teen TV show called The Real Hampton Beach. Ever since Jesse agreed to be part of the cast, her life has been slowly taken away bit by bit. She only agreed to the whole ordeal because Doritos was offering scholarship money. Jesse lost her best friend, she doesn’t get to wear her own clothes, say her own lines, act like herself, or go anywhere she wants. As the filming continues, Jesse stops thinking completely about her actions and starts making some pretty big mistakes. With show business you never know where there could be a hidden camera. A book for more mature teens but also a great page-turning novel.
