Book Pick of the Week - Teen Review

10 P.M. Question by Kate Di Goldi

Frankie Parson is an adolescent with peculiar fears about everything around
him which he shares with his mother. Although she comforts him she herself suffers from neurosis and hasn’t left the house for the past nine years. Although Frankie and Gigs are best friends he never shares his anxieties with him. Gigs radiates with self -confidence and he never confronts Frankie with anything that he is not willing to share. After Sydney joins the school, she befriends Frankie in no time with her inquisitiveness and they share a common interest in writing. Gigs although initially reluctant to be friends with Sydney, allows her to join them once she proves her cricket prowess skills as he is a cricket fanatic. As their friendship develops and Sydney shares her mother’s strange nomadic type life style with Frankie, he feels comfortable to share his concerns. When Sydney has to leave the school although she was hoping to stay for a year, Frankie is devastated and unable to share his feelings with anyone at school and home. Although his mother, sister, brother and father offer help, he avoids everyone
including Sydney. Eventually he reaches out to his Aunt Alma and pours out his heart about Sydney and his mother’s psychotic fears. He finally confronts his mother about her condition and comes in to terms with Sydney’s departure and his mother’s condition.

This is a must read book by all teens as they struggle to deal with different irrational fears without admitting and seeking help. Many teens feel embarrassed about parents, siblings and their own complex feelings about family related issues. This book throws light on how to seek help or handle the situation and more importantly come into terms with it so that one can move on with their lives. Overall Evaluation = Awesome Rating = 5 stars
