Blink and Caution by Tim Wynne Jones
Blink (Brent) and Caution (Kitty) both runaways coming from two dissimilar family backgrounds. Blink leaves his home due to neglect and abuse from his mother and step-father. He lives on leftover food from room service in the halls of fancy hotels wearing stolen clothes. He inadvertently becomes an eyewitness for a staged kidnap of CEO, Jack Niven, who is attempting to influence his mining company stock market position and negotiations with government due to native protestors’ accusation against him on land exploitation. Blink steals some money and a Blackberry from the hotel room where the CEO was abducted and later calls Niven’s daughter to inform that her dad is alive. She convinces him to come over to Kingston and informs him that the kidnap might not be real. She reveals her suspicion that her father might be hiding in the Hunting lodge they own based on the videos broadcasted in television. She begs him to visit the lodge and confirm her father’s safety as she cannot do that herself as their house is under surveillance. She agrees to pay money for his trip but Blink naively plots to make lot of money by taking advantage of the situation.
Caution leaves her house taking blame for accidentally killing her brother during hunting. Her self-worthiness is so low that she settles for physical and mental abuse from her drug dealer boyfriend, Merlin, and believes she deserves nothing better. When she realizes her boyfriend is making her starve while hiding substantial amount of money, she steals some money and goes on the run. She manages to escape from Merlin’s clutches with the help of her cousin by identifying that she was always located by him due to the GPS secretly sewn into her jacket. As she gets robbed on the street and becomes penniless, she steals money from Blink waiting in the station to leave for Kingston but takes pity on him and joins him in the train to return the remaining money. As they get to know each other, they build trust and Caution decides to help Blink, as a penance for her past actions, in his plot to make money out of the mysterious kidnap of CEO. Rest of the story unfolds how these two partners stood up for each other in troubles and return to their origins.
If you love suspense, mystery, thrilling and adventurous stories, you would read this book without setting it aside. Although the story is very transfixing due to the mystery and suspense, and occasionally heartwarming, I wouldn’t recommend this to early teens due to more than moderate swearing and sexual references even though they are alluded to. The main characters journey through distress, salvation, and return to where they belong might also bring hope to teenagers that victimize themselves for lack of self-worthiness.
