Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
The main character of this book is Conor, who is a loner at school and has many issues at home. He isn’t abused or anything but his mother has severe cancer.
Conor wakes up one night to be met by a monster who, of all things, wishes to tell him three stories. Normally one should be utterly terrified if a large, tree shaped monster decides to speak to you, Unfortunately, between dealing with the fact his best friend Lily isn’t speaking to him and being bullied and the nightmare, he frankly doesn’t have the time or energy to be afraid. The monster is there for a reason though and somehow these three stories will accomplish his reason. All he asks for in return for his tellings is an original story by Conor. By the end of the three stories, Conor learns the truth about his mother, her illness and himself that may leave him utterly shattered. The only defense he will have is the knowledge the three stories have brought.
I would recommend this book to teens who enjoy books that will leave you crying.
